Bangladesh Test captain Shakib al Hasan has shed light on the technical faults of the batters following the side’s comprehensive seven-wicket defeat in the first Test of the series against hosts West Indies in Antigua on Sunday.

Bangladesh in the game were all-out for 103 in the first innings to a batting failure and it denied them to regain momentum during rest of the game. Batting has been a chief concern for the Bangladesh in Test cricket recently. Bangladesh in their last five Test matches lost their top five batters inside fifty runs or less.

Shakib, who took field as captain for the first time since 2019, emphasized the need of correcting the technical flaws quickly in order to change performance on the field.

“There are a lot of technical problems and I think we don't have many technically sound players in our team. Everyone has got some technical flaws and they have to find a way on how to score runs and stay in the crease, which is very important,” Shakib told the media in Antigua on Sunday.

Shakib in the game emerged as the only Bangladesh batter to score runs across the innings and found half-centuries in both the innings. The left-handed batter in the first innings posted 51 runs on the board. In the second innings, Shakib partnered with Nurul Hasan to a 123-run stand for the seventh-wicket amid top order failure and added 63 to the total. Nurul found his second half-century in the format scoring 64.

When quarried on what the other batters should do to get rid of the technical problem, Shakib said, “See, it is a problem if I need to talk of that part [technical] too. It is a job for the coaching staff. I think it is better to stick to one’s job and responsibility. Others should also try to do the same. That way the job for the team becomes easy,” said Shakib.

Despite the heavy batting failure Bangladesh bowlers were able to display out a decent performance which Shakib took as positives in the game and that there wasn’t much expectation in the game for Bangladesh.

“Overall I am happy with the overall game as I won't say there were higher expectations than that. I think we had the ability to do something good and we missed out on an opportunity,” said the Bangladesh all-rounder.
