Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque emphasized on having a balance like their ODI team for improving and bringing out positive output.
The Bangladesh national team are travelling back to Dhaka in three groups from South Africa.
Mominul reached the capital of the city along with five others Wednesday.
Bangladesh for the first time returned from South Africa with not just a victory but also a series win.
Tourists Bangladesh had a historical start to the tour with a 2-1 ODI series win against the Proteas.
The tour however, ended on a low after they lost the Test series 2-0 on the back of poor batting display.
Bangladesh in both Tests got dismissed below 100 runs in an innings.
Bangladesh lost the first Test of the series by 220 runs after getting all-out for 53 in the second innings.
In the second game, the visitors conceded a 332-run defeat after getting dismissed on 80 runs in the second innings.
“We were able to finish the ODI series as expected. Speaking of improving in Test – there is no limit to improvement. Test cricket is not like ODI. It is important to play well in all departments in a five-day game. You have to bowl well and bat according to the situation of the game every session. Like I always say, we have a big room to improve in Test cricket,” said Mominul to the media at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The humiliation of the defeats was amplified as Bangladesh batters succumbed to South Africa spinners and not the pacers.
Bangladesh twice in the series lost 10 wickets to Proteas spinners Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer.
Discussion is at large if Bangladesh are still far away from having developed Test mentality despite it being more than 20 years the country has achieved the Test status.
Mominul while speaking on the matter however, doesn’t find a big problem in it.
“These is not the first time [we have performed badly in Test]. We have performed bad even at home. It might be that you have expected a lot from us [after we won the Test in New Zealand]. Many are thinking that we are now No 1 or 2 Test team in the world. We are a settled side in ODI but now in Test and we need to realize that,” said Mominul.
Mominul as a captain is under scrutiny.
Many are of the opinion that the left-handed top-order batter is not being able to lead the team well and that it is also affecting his personal performance.
In the two-match series against South Africa, Mominul could score just 13 runs.
“Root [England Test captain Joe Root] scored around six to seven centuries but he is still under pressure. You will always be under pressure as a captain if the team doesn’t perform. You have to take the pressure as a captain at this level. I am not worried about it. I believe you can improve yourself when under pressure,” said Mominul.
“It is not the first time that we are facing such situation. We have been in this situation before and he have been able to overcome it. We know how to overcome such situations. There is no option to think negatively and be coward. Important for me at the moment is that I do not repeat mistakes in the series ahead,” added the Bangladesh Test captain.
