Newcomers Rupganj Tigers Cricket Club stunned defending champions Abahani Limited after beating them by seven wickets in the very first day of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2022 Tuesday.
RTCC’s Zakir Hasan scored 117 while his opening partner Mizanur Rahman made 93 to help their side reach 256/3 in just 42 overs after Abahani posted 255/9 batting first at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
In other matches of the day, both staged at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan, Prime Bank Cricket Club beat another newbie City Club by 50 runs and Legends of Rupganj beat Gazi Group of Cricketers by 147 runs.
RTCC v Abahani
Mizan set the tone for chasing the total by hitting a four in the third ball of the first over and both the openers showed what was to come as they hit two more boundaries, in the next over.
The batters not only gave their side a solid base but also kept on with the required run-rate as they accumulated 51 runs in the first 10 overs before adding another 64 runs in next 10.
Ultimately the partnership was broken in the 26th over when Mizan was dismissed for 93 off 82 balls with the help of a dozen fours and three sixes and leaving the side on a strong position of 166/1.
RTCC’s Indian recruit Baba Aprajith got dismissed for 11 but wicketkeeper-batsman Zakir continued his onslaught and picked up his century.
He was dismissed in the 40th over after scoring 117 off 116 balls with 15 boundaries and two sixes when the score was 248.
Earlier in the day, after losing the toss it was basically a one-man show from Abahani opener Mohammad Naim in their innings.
Abahani lost quick wickets to get reduced to 48/4 but Naim held one side and with some support from skipper Mosaddek Hossain (37) and Saifuddin (40 not out) helped his side get past 250-run mark.
Naim got out as the seventh batter for 115 off 132 balls in the 46th over.
Mukidul Islam grabbed 3/51 for the victors.
Prime Bank v City Club
At BKSP ground-3 Prime batters made a combined effort to post 265/8 after losing the toss.
Anamul Haque was the only half centurion with 60 runs.
In reply City Club openers gave a flying start reaching 41 from seven overs without losing any wicket.
But after the dismissal of Towfiq Khan (29 off 25) they lost wickets in regular intervals and eventually bundled out for 215 runs.
City Club skipper Jawad Royen, who remained not out on 37, was the highest scorer batting at No 7.
Mahedi Hasan, who played a cameo 27 off 16 for Prime, bagged three wickets and was adjudged player of the match.
Rupganj v Gazi
Rupganj skipper Naeem Islam might have loss the toss at BKSP ground-4 but he led the side from front as he scored 92 batting at No 4 to help them reach 291/7 from stipulated 50 overs.
Sabbir Rahman made a quickfire 42 off 25 batting at seven.
In reply Gazi were never in the chase and got bundled out for 144 in 30.4 overs.
Naeem was adjudged player of the match.
