Barishal get show cause notice on Shakib issue

Shakib breached the bio-bubble before final for personal benefit

Update : 19 Feb 2022, 12:11 AM

Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2022 franchise Fortune Barishal have been served a show-cause notice after captain Shakib al Hasan was found guilty of breaking the Managed Event Environment - placed to keep the team members safe from Covid-19.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan while speaking to the media following the nail biting final of BPL between Comilla Victorians and Barishal at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur Friday informed that the board cannot tolerate such irregularities.

“We did not compromise with the [Covid-19] protocol with any of the series or tournaments we held so far. This time the responsibility lied with the franchises. There was no compromise from the board. The respective franchise have already been show caused. They have been asked how could he [Shakib] go out breaking the bio-bubble [MEE]. We had sent clear message to the teams on how to maintain the bubble. We have served a show-cause letter to them because they broke it,” said Nazmul.

“It was not possible to act immediately. The tournament has finished so we will look into the matter now for sure. We must not tolerate when rules are broken,” the BCB boss added.

Star all-rounder Shakib Thursday triggered yet another controversy by not attending the BPL finalists’ official captains’ photo and media session.

Eyebrows were raised at first and confusions further amplified when two different versions behind Shakib's absence were relayed to the media.

While Barishal media manager informed that Shakib had an upset stomach, Nurul Hasan, Barishal's proxy captain, mentioned that he saw Shakib at the gym before arriving for the photoshoot.

Later in the day it was revealed that Shakib attended a photoshoot of his personal commercial brand.

It is claimed by Barishal that Shakib returned negative in a Covid-19 test before being allowed to play the final against Comilla.

When queried if he expects such incidents, Nazmul said, “It cannot be. The franchise [team management] are more responsible here. He took permission [from the team]. He followed the protocol.”
