Tigers middle-order batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has become the first Bangladeshi to reach 5,000 Test runs.

Mushfiq touched the milestone during the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in the port city Wednesday.

The right-hander ended day three unbeaten on 54.

He needed 15 more runs on day four to reach the landmark.

And the experienced campaigner crossed that mark with a boundary in the first session.

Opener Tamim Iqbal was also very close to crossing the 5,000 mark and he was on course to becoming the first batsman to score 5,000 runs on day three, but he retired hurt with cramp on 133.

Later Mushfiq achieved the feat in his 149th inning in Test cricket.

He also went on to register his eighth Test ton before eventually getting dismissed for 105.

Mushfiq made his debut in 2005 against England at Lord’s and has played 81 Tests so far, including this one, scoring 5,037 runs with an average of 36.5.
