Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan vowed to solve the ongoing Dhaka Premier League impasse by seven days. After a fruitful meeting with the club officials at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday, the BCB boss also assured the players that the new format will be beneficial for them.
The 2012-13 league rolled into uncertainty as few top clubs did not want to play due to the unavailability of national players. Meanwhile, the Board came under immense pressure to start the DPL as many cricketers staged a protest at the BCB office on April 20.
The BCB president assured that he will sit with the club officials within 10 days, but due to the Savar tragedy the meeting was delayed to yesterday.
“We had a very fruitful meeting,” said Nazmul. “We all agreed to two points. Firstly, we want to ensure that the clubs, who are facing some problems, do not face problem and secondly the players should also be benefited from the league.”
With time running out and the monsoon almost here it is still uncertain to many as whether the league will take place this year, but Nazmul revealed that they plan to hold the league next month.
“We have the plan to start the league this year and I hope we can start the league at the middle of June,” he added.
He also said, “We had a meeting regarding the new format of the league where all the club officials agreed to, but we are yet to finalise that format. It will be done in the next meeting.”
Meanwhile, a top club official, asking not to be named, hinted that the DPL this year might also be played in T20 format keeping the T20 World Cup next year in mind.
BCB is also planning to introduce a new grading system in the DPL which will allow most clubs to purchase a player of their choice, but it also raised questions about the players not getting fully paid similar to Bangladesh Premier League franchises.
But Nazmul said, “I think 95 percent of the players will be benefited from this payment system. We are going to assure the payment issue of the players as all the players will sign the contract with the clubs.”
The DPL is of top priority to the chief right now and Nazmul wanted to make sure they “don’t spoil anything on a hurry.”
