Mr Consistent

Update : 13 May 2013, 05:43 PM

The attitude with which the slim 21-year-old walks to the middle hardly gives anyone reason to think they are watching someone special. It is not easy to blend in and hold a position in the national team, but with the mindset he carries – the fearless approach in playing shots and the cool temperament of reading the situation at crucial times – Nasir Hossain, after only a couple of years in international cricket, has becomme a dependable name in Bangladesh cricket.

Since his first international game in Zimbabwe in 2011, when he scored 63 against the hosts, the highest by a Bangladeshi on ODI debut, the lower-middle-order batsman has gone on to earn the name “Mr. Consistent."

Nasir’s willow speaks for him. He may only have played 10 Tests and 25 ODIs for Bangladesh, but in these matches, he has made a place for himself at the top. He averages 46.70 in Tests and 45.35 in ODIs – both are the highest for any Bangladeshi batsmen.

He usually bats at number six, sometimes seven, and can shift gears depending on the match situation. In the past six months Nasir averaging more than 50 in both forms of the game has been a large part of the Tigers’ success against more reputed opponents like West Indies and Sri Lanka.

His consistency was rewarded with his maiden Test ton in Sri Lanka before he struck a matching winning knock in the third ODI to help Tigers level the three-match series 1-1. Nasir was also the top scorer for Bangladesh in their recently concluded series in Zimbabwe. He scored 174 runs in the two Tests and notched up two fifties to become the top scorer in the ODI series with 167 runs.

Besides being a livewire in the field, he is also handy with the ball as was seen during the Test matches. Usually delivering off spin, Nasir showed his versatility in bowling medium paced seamers whenever the team needed an extra paceman.

He has only played T20 matches, and the only major record he hold in the shortest format is to be the only Bangladeshi to date to register a diamond duck (zero runs, out without facing a ball).
