Momentum and history with Bangladesh

Update : 02 May 2013, 05:46 PM

The momentum from winning the second Test and positive memories from the venue will boost Bangladesh's morale as they prepare to lock horns with Zimbabwe in the first of the three match ODI series at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo today.

Having reversed the misfortunes of a crushing defeat in the first Test with a disciplined performance in the second on this tour, the visitors are confident for the shorter format of the game.

Two years ago, the visiting Tigers had a horrific start to the five-match ODI series, losing the first three matches. It was at Bulawayo that a turnaround came, and the team found its rhythm to win the last two matches at that venue.

Those wins last time round came too late, for Bangladesh had already lost the series, but they did come as a blow to Zimbabwe, who usually back themselves to beat their closest rival on home turf.

Going into the series, Bangladesh might have a slight edge over the home side given their form, recent results and experience. However, matches between the two sides have often been unpredictable affairs in which what the form book says is contradicted by what happens on the field.

In the nine days of cricket battle in the Test series, Bangladesh progressively showed promising signs as far as the team's balance goes. The awakening of the middle order and improved discipline in the pace bowling department attack particularly caught the eye.

Speedster Robiul Islam, who was named Man of the Series for his 15 wickets, showed fine accuracy and good use of the outswinger. The 26-year old may have to expand on his repertoire of skills and variations to be just as successful in the 50-over game, which he has yet to play at international level. He is expected to make his debut in today's game. Shamsur Rahman is also likely to be blooded in the series, probably partnering Tamim Iqbal at the top of the order.

Zimbabwe for their part will look to their performance in the first Test for inspiration. A brilliant performance by captain Brendan Taylor, along with solid contributions from the likes of Kyle Jarvis, Malcolm Waller, Graeme Cremer and Shingi Masakadza give the hosts hope of breaking their Bulawayo jinx. Zimbabwe have won just two of eight matches against the Tigers at the Queens Sports Club venue against the Tigers.
