Bangladesh following their maiden overseas win over New Zealand on Wednesday finished second in the tri-nation series and reached their best ever ODI team ranking - No 6 - leaving Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the West Indies behind.
The Tigers defeated the Kiwis by five wickets in Dublin on Wednesday.
Bangladesh went into the series with 91 rating points. A win over New Zealand and host Ireland and a drawn game against the home side earned the Tigers two rating points.
This saw the Tigers finish the series with 93 rating points to go level with the Lankans, who were previously No 6. However, Bangladesh leapfrogged Sri Lanka by a fraction of rating point – 0.012 to be precise.
A rating is worked out by dividing the points scored by the match/series total, with the answer given to the nearest whole number. It can be compared with a batting average but with points instead of total runs scored and a match/series total instead of number of times dismissed.
Following every series, teams receive a certain number of points, based on a mathematical formula. This formula is based on only two factors – the series result and the relative ratings of the two teams going into the series. Each team’s new points total is then divided by its new match/series total to give an updated rating.
For Bangladesh, the achievement is a significant one, given that they have taken yet another step towards ensuring direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup. Only the top eight teams in the ranking as off the cut-off date set by the ICC will directly qualify for the 50-over World Cup, to be hosted by England.
The ICC ranking updates see the matches played post May 1, 2014. Bangladesh had come into the series losing one rating point and a game in the three-match ODI series against host Sri Lanka last month. The series ended 1-1 after the second game of the series got washed off. The Lankans won the third match while Bangladesh were victorious in the first.
