Coach: Mustafiz must work for Test appearances

Since his international debut in 2015, Mustafiz has played 13 Tests for Bangladesh. However, compared to the limited-over cricket, the left-arm pacer has been low key with the red ball having just 28 wickets under his belt.

Bangladesh men’s national cricket team head Russell Domingo thinks left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman will need to work on techniques before seriously being considered Test squad.

Mustafiz was omitted from the Bangladesh squad for Pakistan Test that is set to travel to Rawalpindi Tuesday. It was widely reported that Mustafiz was being set aside to concentrate on limited-over cricket but Domingo on Monday clarified the air giving straight forward explanation.

“Mustafiz knows he is under a bit of pressure particularly in white-ball cricket. He is still our No 1 bowler, with the most experience and skills. He performs really well under pressure. Bowlers in particular situations can come under some pressure, like at the death or up front,” said Domingo to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday.

“His form can fluctuate because it is a tough job. I have full confidence that he can get back in white-ball cricket. He has some work to do in Tests. I know Charl Langeveldt was busy working with him. Ottis Gibson will continue to do the work, to get him to shape the ball into the right-hander. He has some technical work to do, before he is seriously considered in Tests again,” clarified Bangladesh head coach Domingo.

Since his international debut in 2015, Mustafiz has played 13 Tests for Bangladesh. However, compared to the limited-over cricket, the left-arm pacer has been low key with the red ball having just 28 wickets under his belt. Mustafiz’s future in longer version of the game had emerged as a point of discussion lately. With almost a brand coaching panel in the dressing room that intends to have separate squads for different formats of the game, putting Mustafizur off and effort to find best possible option for the format can be related.

When queried of splitting squads for different formats of the game, Domingo said, “I have said that some guys will not double up for both formats. When you don’t have a great deal of options, you need to make sure that you got guys who are capable of playing both formats. We will be looking at certain positions where we will try to have guys playing one or format.”
