Bangladesh U-19 batsman Mahmudul Hasan Joy scored a fine century as they beat their New Zealand counterparts by eight wickets to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match unofficial ODI series.

In pursuit of 224, the junior Tigers romped home in 36.5 overs in the third game at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln Sunday, riding on Joy’s 103 off 95 balls, featuring as many as 16 fours and a six.

Joy had missed out on a well deserved century in the second match at the same venue Thursday, falling short by just one run, but he did one better Sunday, reaching the three-figure mark to guide the visiting side to their destination.

Joy was unbeaten at the end along with No 4 batsman Towhid Hridoy, who was not out on 51 off 59 deliveries, with eight boundaries.

The unbroken third wicket pair added 128 to ensure an easy win for the youngsters in red and green, who won the first two games by a similar margin of six wickets.

Bangladesh U-19 opener Anik Sarkar Setu was earlier dismissed for just one but the other opening batter Tanzid Hasan and Joy recovered the early damage, putting on 90 for the second wicket.

Tanzid made 65 off 64 balls, studded with eight fours and a six, and after his departure, Joy and Hridoy carried on the good work to take the junior Tigers to the shore.

Earlier, asked to bat first, the home side registered 223 on the board losing eight wickets in their stipulated 50 overs, thanks to No 3 batsman Fergus Lellman’s unbeaten 116 off 133 deliveries, including seven boundaries and five over boundaries.

However, none of the other New Zealand U-19 batters were able to prolong their innings as Bangladesh U-19 took wickets at regular intervals.

The visiting side’s Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Avishek Das and Hasan Murad bagged two wickets apiece while Shariful Islam picked up one.

The fourth and penultimate match will be held Wednesday.
