Tigers desperate to get rid of mental pressure

Soumya made starts on most occasions in last ten innings but failed to convert

Update : 29 Jul 2019, 09:54 PM

The Bangladesh cricketers in Colombo had a day off on Monday. The series is lost, the bodies have taken a heavy toll having played cricket over past three months relentlessly and on top is the pressure of not being able to play up to the expectation.

Most of the team members stayed in the hotel for lunch while Bangladesh captain for the series Tamim Iqbal was spotted with his former national coach Chandika Hathurusingha. The discussion between the two in front of the lift in the hotel lobby had caught attention of the reporters who were there to cover Soumya Sarkar’s interaction with the media.

Tamim has been the point of discussion amongst the cricket enthusiasts for his below par performance since the World Cup 2019 and one could assume that his discussion with Hathurusingha must have been related to the cricketer’s batting.

Bangladesh in the short tour of Sri Lanka have already conceded defeats in two games and the last match of the three-match series is scheduled to take place on Wednesday. The Tigers have failed in their mission of revival from the low that hit during the World Cup and now their only hope is saving the utter humiliation of a clean-sweep defeat.

As it is said cricket is a mental game and when nothing is going right, you need to press the reset button and get your acts right as soon possible. Soumya has been one amongst the others to have been underperforming and according to the left-handed batsman he along with others is trying to work on it.

“We are concerned and thinking about it to be honest. We had come with a vision to play the series well and we were prepared for it. But as it happened we lost the first two matches and we are worried now. We are thinking and trying to find out things that are going wrong with us. We [the players] are talking to the concerned people for help and way to get out from it. We have a game left and will hope to win that,” said Soumya to the reporters in Colombo on Monday.

Soumya made starts on most occasions in last ten innings but failed to convert. The southpaw was in sizzling form having scored three half centuries in as many games and aid Bangladesh to lift its maiden multination trophy defeating West Indies in the final of tri-nation series at Ireland prior to the World Cup.

But, since then he has been without a fifty despite getting off to a good start in almost all games.

“I am concerned [of not being able to score big] and I am trying to find the way out. I had scored three half centuries right ahead of the World Cup but now it is not happening. There is no trouble with my skills it might be more of a mental stuff. I am trying to work on those areas. I hope I will be able to get back on the track soon,” said the Bangladesh opener.
