The Kiwis reached the target of 245 losing eight wickets in 47.1 overs

Update : 05 Jun 2019, 06:33 PM

New Zealand batsmen hold their nerves till the end and defeated Bangladesh by two wickets during their 2019 ICC World Cup match at the Oval on Wednesday.

Replying Bangladesh’s 244, th

e Kiwis reached 248-8 in 47.1 overs to get their second win in as many matches so far in the tournament.

Mitchel Santner struck the winning boundary to keep their hundred percent record of winning.

New Zealand lost both their openers within 10 overs as Martin Guptill (25) and Colin Munro (24) lost their wickets against Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh could have taken the third in the twelfth over when New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was well short while taking a run. But television replays showed Bangladesh’s wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim had dislodged the bells before the ball reached to his hand and thus the third umpire gave his verdict of not out.

After the reprieve, the experienced due Williamson and Ross Taylor capitalized the chance well and formed a 105-run partnership in the fourth wicket.

Off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz brought Bangladesh back in to game as he took two wickets, Williamson (40) and Tom Latham (0), in the first and last ball of the 32nd over.

Another off-spinner Mosaddek Hossain removed man of the match Taylor, who made 82 off 91 balls, in the 39th over.

Mushfiq made some amends by taking a good catch down the leg side to get rid of the big man and pave the way for an improbable comeback.

He made another sharp catch in the 43rd over, when he jumped overhead to dismiss Collin de Grandhomme of a Mohammad Saifuddin delivery, with the cheers of thousands of Bangladeshi fans present in the crowd.

Mosaddek picked up James Neesham and Saifuddin bowled Matt Henry but it proved little to late as Kiwis were able to navigate home.

Earlier New Zealand skipper Ken Williamson won the toss and elected to field first.

Bangladesh kept their winning combination from South Africa game and placed the unchanged playing eleven against the Kiwis.

Bangladesh made a steady opening partnership as openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarker formed 45-run partnership at the top.

But New Zealand pacer Henry bowled Soumya (25) in the third ball of the ninth over to break the partnership and soon Tamim also departed scoring 24.
