Fitter Shakib determined for a great WC

Shakib al Hasan is the fifth all-rounder in the history of the game to achieve the landmark, but he reached there by playing less number of games than any of the previous four

Ace Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan made yet another record in his illustrious career as the left-hander became the fastest player to score 5000-plus runs and take 250 wickets in ODIs.

Prior to the Tigers opening match in the World Cup against South Africa Sunday at the Oval, Shakib had scored 5,717 runs and bagged 249 wickets in ODIs and he needed just one wicket to achieve that feat.

Shakib took the wicket of Aiden Markram by cleaning him up in the fourth ball of the 20th over during South Africa’s chase to enter into the history book.

He is the fifth all-rounder in the history of the game to achieve the landmark, but he reached there by playing less number of games than any of the previous four.

The other four all-rounders are South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzak.

Shakib helped the Tigers score a good total of 330 with his 75-run innings off 84 balls after they were asked to bat first.

The left-hander was out off the first ball of Jasprit Bumrah in their practice match against India, but seemed to carry his form of Ireland, where he made 50 not out, 29 and 61 not out in his three innings in the recently-concluded tri-nation ODI series, to help Bangladesh.

Shakib had suffered a finger injury in early 2018 and that injury has affected his play ever since as he a missed few crucial international matches.

But he seemed determined for a good World Cup show and during the Ireland tri-series, he looked a lot fitter and later, he informed that he lost 6kgs of weight in the last four weeks.

Shakib said he has been preparing himself for the World Cup by controlling his diet and working hard to become fitter.

“I have been preparing myself for the last two months for the World Cup. I have worked really hard. This is probably the best effort I have given in the last eight-nine years. I have done every possible thing to become fitter. I think I am in a good position now,” Shakib said in the first week of May.

Shakib entered into the World Cup as the No 1 ODI all-rounder according to the latest ICC ranking by leapfrogging Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan.

Bangladesh head coach Steve Rhodes also said prior to the tournament that Shakib has a point to prove why he is No 1 in the world.
