Taskin’s ripper to Tharanga
Sri Lanka were cruising, thanks to their opening wicket partnership, after they lost the toss and were asked to bat first. The Lankans scored 76 in their first 10 overs, flaying the bowlers all over the park. Although Mehedi Hasan Miraz picked up the first wicket, Taskin Ahmed’s delivery to Upul Tharanga was crucial considering the context of the game. It was a fast and fullish delivery around leg stump and Tharanga was clearly beaten for pace. The stumps were scattered and Taskin started off his in his trademark celebration. Dinesh Chandimal was caught short of the crease in unusual fashion. Or perhaps he was just unlucky! The incident happened in the 26th over. Shakib al Hasan was bowling and Kusal Mendis played a cut shot. It was an easy single. Taskin collected the ball at deep point and threw it back to Mushfiqur Rahim. Mushfiq dislodged the bails and appealed straightaway. Even though Chandimal was well in, the on-field umpires called for the third umpire. After some moments, Bangladesh were convinced that the batsman was not out and returned to their fielding position. But TV replays suggested that Chandimal’s foot and bat were both off the ground when the bails were dislodged. And so Bangladesh got a lucky breakthrough.Kulasekara’s slippery celebration
Tamim Iqbal survived the fifth ball of the first over, bowled by Nuwan Kulasekara, as it went past the wicket-keeper and first slip. In the very next ball, Tamim tried to play a flick off a leg stump delivery and got a leading edge. The ball went straight up into the air and bowler Kulasekara caught the ball. But while celebrating, he tried to toss the ball up into the air only to slip to the ground. The Lankans were celebrating but Tamim got confused. Suddenly the Steve Waugh-Herschelle Gibbs conversation suddenly popped up in head. Gibbs dropped the catch while celebrating prematurely. Waugh later scored a century and saved Australia, who later won the 1999 World Cup. But this time, Tamim was out as Kulasekara clearly caught the ball and held it long enough in his hands. So Tamim fell and Bangladesh’s mini top-order collapse started.
