Reaching 100 in style

Update : 20 Mar 2017, 03:44 AM
In the process, Bangladesh levelled the Joy Bangla Cup Test series 1-1 at P Saravanamuttu Oval in Colombo on Sunday. The much needed away Test win is even more special as the win came in Bangladesh’s 100th five-day game. Chasing a challenging 191-run target, opening batsmen Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar started the innings cautiously as Sri Lanka skipper Rangana Herath started with spin from both ends. Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the eighth over when Soumya (10) charged down the ground against Herath only to manage a top edge. Herath struck immediately in the next ball as Imrul Kayes was caught at first slip. So from 22 without loss, Bangladesh were suddenly 22/2 and under pressure. But Tamim formed a brilliant partnership alongside No 4 batsman Sabbir Rahman to release the pressure. Tamim and Sabbir added 109 runs for the third wicket. This partnership was perhaps the turning point for the Tigers as both the batsmen dominated after lunch. Tamim scored 10 runs in two balls in the 30th over – the first hit a beautiful boundary over extra cover and the next a huge sixer over long on. The match was slowly but surely going out of Sri Lanka’s reach. Tamim eventually got out in the 37th over for 82. Tamim charged down the ground for a sixer against Dilruwan Perera but was unable to middle it. The ball went high up into the air and Dinesh Chandimal took a brilliant catch running back. The score was 131 then. Tamim’s valuable 82 runs was composed with seven boundaries and a huge six. Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Sri Lanka skipper Rangana Herath are all smiles with the Test series trophy AFPJust three overs later, Perera got the wicket of Sabbir and Sri Lanka were right back into the game. Sabbir scored 41 runs off 71 balls with five boundaries. Later, Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim remained not out until the tea session as Bangladesh still needed 35 runs to win. Just after tea, Shakib played on against Perara for 15. The wicket fell when Bangladesh still needed 29 runs. Bangladesh lost one more wicket, that of Mosaddek Hossain (13), but Mushfiq guided the team to their destination with an unbeaten 22 while Mehedi Hasan Miraz was not out on two. Meanwhile, Tamim was adjudged man of the match for his valiant knocks while Shakib was named player of the series for his nine wickets and 164 runs in four innings. Earlier, Sri Lanka started the fifth day on 268/8, a lead of 139 runs. Overnight batsmen Perera and Suranga Lakmal started confidently and scored some quick runs. Mushfiq brought Mustafizur Rahman into the attack while Shakib came from the other end. Mustafizur created some chances with his slower deliveries and variation but was unable to give Bangladesh the breakthrough. The partnership between Perera and Lakmal was getting dangerous. The Tigers however, finally got the wicket of Perera in the 113th over. He was run out by a smart piece of move by Miraz. Perera scored 50 off 174 balls, hitting half a dozen boundaries. In the very next over, Lakmal also got out as the Lankans eventually posted a fighting total. Shakib took four wickets for Bangladesh while Mustafizur bagged three.BRIEF SCORESri Lanka 338 & 319 in in 113.2 overs (Karunaratne 126, Shakib 4/74) lost to Bangladesh 467 & 191/6 in 57.5 overs (Tamim 82, Sabbir 41) by four wickets
