Smith can take part in BPL

Former Australia captain Steve Smith can take part in the upcoming sixth season of the Bangladesh Premier League T20, scheduled to begin on January 5 next year.

Earlier, Smith was denied participation for Comilla Victorians as the governing body disallowed the move after other franchises protested about the breach of rules which state that no player should be allowed to be replaced outside the players’ draft.

However, the franchises have agreed on terms now that every team can replace one player outside the players’ draft.

In that regard, Comilla’s decision to replace Sri Lankan Asela Gunaratne with Smith has now been accepted.

“We have reconsidered Comilla’s decision to include Smith. Comilla can go on and register Smith’s inclusion. Those franchises who had opposed his move, two days ago they changed their stance. We wanted to take this decision democratically. Every franchise can now replace one player outside the players’ draft,” said Jalal Younus, chairman of the BPL technical committee, to Dhaka Tribune Thursday.

One-time BPL champion Comilla created quite a buzz in November this year in the Bangladesh cricket fraternity with the inclusion of middle-order batsman Smith.

If Smith does turn out for Comilla, this will be his fourth commitment in a T20 league, following his ban imposed due to ball-tampering.

The Australian cricketer has played in Canada's Global T20 and Caribbean Premier League T20, and has landed a deal with the Pakistan Super League T20.

Provided Smith features for Comilla, he will be joined by compatriot David Warner in the league.

Warner had earlier signed up with Sylhet Sixers.

The duo's ban from top-flight cricket ends on March 29, 2019.

The BPL will get underway with the match between defending champion Rangpur Riders and Chittagong Vikings at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

A day later, Comilla will take on Sylhet at the same venue.
