The West Indies middle-order batsman Roston Chase admitted slow batting approach during the middle overs did not let them post a challenging total that ultimately cost them the first ODI in the three-match series against Bangladesh in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday.
The Windies finished their innings on a below par 195 for nine after 50 overs.
They could manage to score only 98 runs in 30 overs in power play 2 (between 10 to 40 overs) that proved to be the decisive factor in the end as they lost by five wickets.
“In the beginning and in the middle overs we didn’t really capitalise on our scoring areas. We got stuck in the middle and didn’t rotate. We played 171 dot balls and I don’t think that’s acceptable in international cricket. We also lacked boundary options in the middle. Once the field was spread, the Bangladeshi players really squeezed us and we didn’t get as much runs as we should. We didn’t adjust to the pitch properly. The pitch was playing a bit slow but we were just playing hard-wicket shots. The pitch was holding a bit. I just thought that our batters took a bit too long to read the situation and it cost us many runs,” Chase said during the post-match press conference in Mirpur Sunday.

“Personally, I think we didn’t get enough runs. We spoke before the match and said the par score was around 230-240. We fell short of that and paid the price. We need to show a little more intent in those middle overs, try to push the score along in those crucial areas of the game – at the start and in the middle overs,” he added.
Chase believes despite losing the first match comprehensively to the home side, the series is not over.
The West Indies camp are determined to bounce back in the next match and register their first win of the tour.
“I think we go back to the drawing board, we look at our plans and we will look at where we fell down in this match and improve on that. I will never say the series is over – we are going to come back strong. We know the guys will be up for the challenge, so we are looking forward to the next game,” Chase concluded.
