Amid the wicket-fest by the spinners, Bangladesh off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz could fetch just three wickets in the first Test match against the West Indies, but he played a crucial role by removing the opponent’s most destructive batsman twice. Shimron Hetmyer, who made a swash-buckling 63 off just 47 balls, once again fell to Miraz after he struck some lusty blows. Hetmyer took 17 in the seventh over bowled by Shakib al Hasan, but as he attempted an onslaught against Miraz, the left-hander was caught in the deep by Nayeem Hasan while playing against the spin to be dismissed for 27 off just 19 balls. Bangladesh reduced the Windies to 11/4 while defending 204, but the counter attack by Hetmyer gave the host some concern, and it was Miraz who brought them back in the driving seat once again. The visitor however, raised their hope yet again when Sunil Ambris and Jomel Warrican formed a 50-plus stand for the ninth wicket, getting dangerously close to the target. But once again, the man with the golden arm Miraz rescued the side as he got rid of Warrican to break the 63-run stand, and end any last realistic hope the Windies had of pulling off a famous victory. The scorecard will read Miraz only finished with three wickets, but it will not tell the whole story. After all, those three scalps were the most important in the context of the match.
