Soumya: My out was a mistake, Shakib was unlucky

Update : 09 Mar 2017, 11:11 PM
“It was the first pace ball I faced [Thursday]. So, I shouldn’t have played that shot. If I had maybe taken some more time before playing that, then maybe it would have connected. Since it was the first ball, maybe it did not connect. It was a mistake,” Soumya told the media in the post-day press conference on Thursday in Galle following the second day's proceedings. “If I didn’t play that, it would have been good for me and even better for the team. “Two opportunities have come in three matches. I was trying to finish big. Maybe because I had to start a new innings [Thursday] my concentration was not what it was [Wednesday], or I could not fully find my rhythm. If I get such an opportunity like this next time, if I am batting on 70 or 80, then of course I will try to finish the job and score big runs,” he said. Soumya also said Shakib’s dismissal was unlucky. “Lakshan Sandakan is a chinaman bowler and he bowled the wrong’un. And Shakib bhai was able to read that and saw that there was no fielder at fine leg. So he may have thought that since it’s away from the stumps, he will get two runs from it, and there is little chance of getting out,” he said. “So in my view, I will say it was very unlucky. It’s not a matter of experience; he is obviously a very experienced player. He was unlucky not to have connected, if he had connected, it would have been good for everyone,” he added. Soumya informed that it was the batsmen's responsibility to post a significant total on a good batting track. Since Bangladesh failed in this regard, Soumya said they have to give more than 100 percent on the field in the next two days in order to achieve a good result in Galle Test. “Our plan was to bat the whole day. We tried as much as possible but unfortunately, we were all out. Now, we have to give even more than we did when we started. If before we had given 100 percent, then we have to give 120, or even 150 percent to bring the match back in our favour or to win. So of course, [Friday] there will be an effort to execute the plans we have,” said Soumya.
