Shakib to fly to Australia for further assessment

BCB chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury informed that Shakib al Hasan is in stable condition now and they are planning to send him to Australia for further treatment, and will follow the doctor’s advice

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan’s injury went from bad to worse while playing for the country and the left-hander is supposed to fly to Australia soon for his treatment.

BCB chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury also informed that Shakib is in stable condition now and they are planning to send him to Australia for further treatment, and will follow the doctor’s advice.

“Quite a few amount of pus have been removed from Shakib’s injured finger within three-four days. His condition has improved slightly. He is suffering less pain now. At the moment, he is under antibiotic treatment. It will continue for one more week and we are hoping his infection will be controlled within this period. In the meantime we are planning to send him to the hand surgeon Dr Greg Hoy in Melbourne, Australia,” informed Dr Debashish Wednesday at the BCB office in Mirpur.

“He will fly to Melbourne for two reasons. Firstly to find out his hand condition at the moment and secondly when the surgery is required and what would be the plans. So Shakib will probably fly to Australia [Thursday], subject to the availability of the doctor’s appointment. So at the moment one month is needed to manage Shakib’s current injury situation. After a month, according to doctor’s advice, we will go for surgery or take appropriate measures then,” said the physician.

Shakib had to return home on an urgent basis from the Asia Cup and it was discovered his hand could have become dysfunctional if doctors further delayed extracting pus from his infected organ.

Now the ace-all rounder has to wait at least a month for the healing of infection before going for the surgery of his hand that was injured back in January during Bangladesh’s tri-nation series final against Sri Lanka at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

Shakib continued to play international matches throughout the year and the question was raised as to whether the BCB forced him to play and if it aggravated the state of his injury.

But Dr Debashish said it is quite normal to play with inflammation that Shakib was carrying and he would even continue his international run, but unfortunately he was infected and that made things worse.

“Many players have continued playing with such injuries before. Unfortunately, Shakib’s case got worse because of the infection. But if it was only inflammation rather than infection then Shakib could have played the upcoming Zimbabwe series as well,” said Debashish.

He even added that surgery is the last resort for a sportsperson and sometimes that even worsens the situation, hence they were reluctant about a surgery earlier.

“It’s difficult to come to a conclusion for this kind of injury. Shakib played with this injury in the last few series. Actually operative procedure is the last stage of any treatment. If a player can continue playing without surgery and recovers with general treatment then usually we avoid surgery,” said the physician.

“Sometimes operation can create more complicacy in this kind of surgery. Hand surgeons always prefer surgery as the last option. That’s why we took the chance for not performing surgery at that time.  Sometimes it cause problems and sometimes it doesn’t,” he added.
