Bangladesh Cricket Board chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury has provided an update on the injuries sustained by Tigers' ODI captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza at the BCB headquarters Wednesday.
The right-arm medium-fast bowler took a stunning catch of Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik at short-midwicket and the ball was struck so well that catching it immediately caused discomfort for Mashrafe and he was forced off the field and later returned with strapping on his ring and little fingers.
“Mashrafe had a hit on his ring and little fingers and among those the hit on the little finger is kind of serious. There is strain and bone involvement. Generally these injuries heal within three weeks. Since a few days have already passed, we are hoping that he will be fit to play within two weeks,” Dr Debashish said.
That however, is not the only injury that the charismatic captain is carrying, who marshaled his way through the final, even with these injuries.

“He had a hit on his thigh while batting and as a result blood clotted there. We had already one scan and it seems it is blood clotting. To become more sure, we will perform another scan [Thursday]. If we can confirm that it’s just blood clotting then there are two processes of treatment. One is natural healing which generally recovers within two-three weeks. Otherwise we have to undergo surgery to remove blood clotting but that’s a rare case.” Dr Debashish added.
Already, Test and T20I captain Shakib al Hasan and left-handed opening batsmen Tamim Iqbal are key senior players dealing with finger injuries that will most likely keep them out of action for the rest of the year. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is dealing with a rib injury and might be a doubt for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe.
Bangladesh play their first game against Zimbabwe in an ODI on October 21.
