Mominul included as back up for Asia Cup

According to national team’s chief selector Minhajul Abedin, Mominul’s inclusion was based as a back-up option with a few Bangladesh batsmen carrying some niggles

The BCB included top-order batsman Mominul Haque in the Bangladesh squad for the Asia Cup that will commence next Saturday. Two-time Asia Cup finalist Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka in the tournament opener at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

According to national team’s chief selector Minhajul Abedin, Mominul’s inclusion was based as a back-up option with a few Bangladesh batsmen carrying some niggles. Opener Tamim Iqbal has reported of a slight discomfort on his hand while Nazmul Hossain Shanto was hit on the right index finger during practice Wednesday.

The team management is confident that both the batsmen will recover and gain match fitness in time to play in the tournament’s curtain raiser. Left-handed batsman Mominul last appeared for Bangladesh in an ODI during the World Cup 2015 in Australia.

The 26-year old was given a tag as a Test specialist and was kept out from the ODI team. Riding on his recent performance in the tour of Ireland with the Bangladesh A team, Mominul made his claim stronger and forced into the ODI side, albeit as a back-up for the time being.

The southpaw scored a belligerent 182 off 133 balls with 27 fours and three sixes in the fourth one-day match against Ireland A team to show that his batting is tailor-made for shorter version matches as well.
