Sanjamul wants to follow in Razzak, Sunny’s footsteps

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam informed that their lower-order batsmen are practising hard in order to contribute more so that genuine batters can play with more freedom at the middle. The Tigers practised at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Wednesday, ahead of the tri-nation ODI series against visiting sides Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. “As lower-order batsmen, we’re trying to improve our batting. Then we can fight even more in a match. If the lower-order batsmen can contribute valuable runs regularly then our main batsmen can play with more freedom. So as lower-order batsmen, if we can help then it will be a good advantage for the team,” Sanjamul informed the media during training. Apart from all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, Bangladesh usually played one more left-arm spinner in their ODI set-up in the last few years. After Abdur Razzak and Arafat Sunny, Sanjamul, a regular performer in the domestic level, may feel he is the next in line to fill the void.

“After Razzak bhai, Sunny bhai performed well. Unfortunately he is unavailable due to bowling action. Now I have got the chance. I will try my best to perform well and give good support to Shakib bhai,” said Sanjamul. “It’s important to perform in the domestic league. We have a good competitive domestic league. The more matches you play, the more confidence you can gain. Definitely, performing there gives more confidence to a player. “Spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi also guided me in practice. I am working with him as to how I can bowl to different types of batsmen and in different conditions,” he added. Sanjamul made his international debut against Ireland in Dublin in May, 2017. Sanjamul bowled five overs in that match and took two wickets conceding 22 runs. Since then, the left-arm spinner didn’t get any chance in the playing XI.

However, the spinner informed that he has learned quite a few things during his national team journey and that he now wants to prove himself in favourable condition. “I think I did not get any chance after playing one match there due to condition. By this time, I have tried to learn a lot. Now I have got my chance, and I want to apply that to get success in home condition. My target is to perform regularly and become a consistent cricketer in the team,” he explained. “I am still leaning. There were some tactical problems. I have worked hard to overcome those. There is a huge difference between seeing international cricket on TV and playing it. So I am trying to learn those,” he concluded.
