Minhajul: Soumya needs a break

Update : 07 Jan 2018, 08:37 PM
Chief Bangladesh selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu informed that left-handed opener Soumya Sarkar needs a break from international cricket to get back to run-scoring ways. The BCB announced the 16-man squad for the first two matches of the tri-nation ODI series, featuring host Bangladesh and visiting sides Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Soumya was dropped from the squad after the Tigers’ three ODIs against South Africa. The chief national selector said there is no question about Soumya’s talent but the young opener needs a break from the rigours of international cricket in order to rediscover his natural scoring touch.

“Soumya has played every format in the last few series. There is no question about his talent. But he has not been consistent in recent times. So we have decided to give him a break. Definitely Soumya is in our plan as he is one of the players playing the pull shot. We hope he will find his form soon,” Minhajul said to the media during the squad announcement at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Sunday. “Overall we have decided to give him a break. Soumya needs a break from international cricket to get back on track mentally. Keeping consistency is very important for a player. Soumya is a talented player. He has played some fantastic innings for Bangladesh. I hope he will come back strongly soon,” he added. Soumya scored 243 runs in 11 innings last year at an average of 29.3 and strike rate of 89.07.
