Shakib named Bangladesh Test captain, Mahmudullah vice captain

Update : 10 Dec 2017, 08:14 PM
All-rounder Shakib al Hasan has been declared the new Bangladesh Test captain, replacing wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim. BCB officials sat for a board meeting Sunday afternoon in Dhaka, chaired by president Nazmul Hasan. BCB boss Nazmul informed the change of Test captaincy to the media following the meeting. “We have decided to change the Test captain of Bangladesh. Shakib will be the captain of Bangladesh in the next Test series. Mahmudullah will be vice-captain,” said Nazmul. “Basically we think that we need a change in captaincy. We need Mushfiqur Rahim’s best batting in the Test format. So we believe he can concentrate more on batting now and play with less pressure. We have set a plan for the next five years. And it’s a step in that direction. There might be changes in several areas in future as well,” he added.

Shakib is already leading the Tigers in T20Is. And so, after getting the Test captaincy, questions have been raised as to whether Shakib will lead the side in ODIs as well following the retirement of current skipper Mashrafe bin Mortaza. BCB chief Nazmul said, “He might be. But it’s difficult to comment on that at the moment. There are two types of policy. One is we will assign three different captains in as many formats. We have already worked on that. The other theory is we will select the same captain for all three formats. We have analysed both the options. Mashrafe is our ODI captain at the moment. So we will not change the ODI captain now. So two captains will do the job at the moment.” Shakib was previously handed the captaincy in 2009 during Bangladesh’s tour of the West Indies after Mashrafe got injured in the first Test match. Later, Bangladesh won the second Test to clinch the series 2-0 against the Windies. Bangladesh played eight more Tests under Shakib’s captaincy, losing all of them. Shakib lost his captaincy in 2011 after the Zimbabwe series where Bangladesh lost the one-off Test and the ODI series 2-3.
