Rangpur Riders spinner Nazmul Islam Apu revealed the secret behind his “snake dance” celebration during the post-match press conference after their four-wicket win against Sylhet Sixers at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium Tuesday.
Nazmul is often seen celebrating raising both his hands over his head and moving like a snake whenever he gets a wicket or makes a significant contribution for his team. Such kind of celebration was seen during last year’s BPL as well when Nazmul played for Rajshahi Kings. This season, Nazmul is playing for Rangpur after the franchise recruited him from Rajshahi during the players’ auction. Nazmul may have changed his team but the celebration remains the same. He was instrumental behind Rangpur’s crucial win against Sylhet as he took three wickets, conceding just 18 runs from his quota of four overs.
Nazmul also put in a brilliant fielding effort as Rangpur broke the important partnership of Pakistan’s Babar Azam and No 5 batsman Sabbir Rahman. Nazmul’s direct throw caught Babar short of the crease and gave Rangpur their desired breakthrough during Sylhet’s innings. Later, Nazmul was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant performance. When queried about his unique celebration during the presser, Nazmul answered with a broad smile. Let’s hear it from Nazmul himself.
“Last year I played for Rajshahi Kings. Darren Sammy was the captain of Rajshahi then. During play, when I tried to do this snake celebration, Sammy pretended to be afraid. From then it all started. It’s a funny thing. After that it continued, and thus it became a trademark celebration for me,” said Nazmul with a cheeky smile on his face.
Nazmul has played five matches for Rangpur so far, taking five wickets at an economy rate of 7.71. Nazmul played 10 matches in BPL 4 for Rajshahi, bagging seven scalps at an economy rate of 6.
