Bangladesh U19 thrash Afghans in first one-dayer

Bangladesh U-19 defeated their Afghanistan counterparts by a huge margin of 145 runs in the first of five one-day matches at Sylhet International Stadium Thursday. The home side were asked to bat first and posted a respectable 222 for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs with Towhid Ridoy top-scoring with a 85-ball 52. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mahidul Islam (35), Kazi Anik (27), and openers Pinak Ghosh (23) and Saif Hasan (20) all chipped in with vital contributions. Mujeeb was the wrecker in chief for the visiting side, picking up an impressive four wickets conceding only 22 in 10 overs, including a maiden.

In reply however, the tourist were skittled out for 77 in 34.2 overs with only two batsmen – opener Tariq Stanikzai (16) and middle-order batsman Nisar Wahdat (10) – reaching double digits. Anik bagged four wickets while Nayeem Hasan picked up three as the Afghans finished their innings with more than 15 overs remaining.

The host might have given youth one-day debuts to as many as five cricketers but they were still more than a handful for the struggling visiting side.
