Junior Tigers take lead with eight-wicket win

Bangladesh Under-19 took a 1-0 lead in the three-match one-day series after registering a comprehensive eight-wicket win over the visiting West Indies Under-19 side at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday.

The junior Tigers restricted the Caribbeans to 114 before achieving the target losing four wickets and 30 overs to spare.

Opening batsman Gidron Pope was the highest scorer with 31 runs while Emmanuel Stewart added 30 for the visitors.

Left-arm spinner Saleh Ahmed Shawon was the pick of the bowlers as he took 4/24 with supports from Sanjit Saha and Saeed Sarkar, who bagged two wickets each for the home side.

Pinak Ghosh (3) and Joyraz Sheikh (18) were the casualties upfront as left-handed Nazmul Hossain Shanto (41) and Saif Hasan (39) later guided the Bangladeshis home. Fast bowlers Obed McCoy and Odean Smith took a wicket each for the bowling side.

Both the teams will travel to Chittagong for the remaining two one-dayers on Thursday and Saturday at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium. Bangladesh U-19 sponsor Robi announced two awards for the ongoing series. Each of the award – Robi Best Bangladeshi Youth Performer and Robi Man of the Series – is worth USD 500.
