BCL begins Jan 10, BCL U-19 Feb 17

Update : 27 Dec 2015, 06:55 PM

Bangladesh Cricket League, the franchise-based first-class tournament, is all set to raise the curtains of its 2016 season. Bangladesh Cricket Board’s tournament committee chairman Akram Khan informed that the tournament will begin on January 10 and will be played in Bogra and Khulna, given that Bangladesh will be hosting the 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cup, followed by the Asia Cup Twenty20 at that point of time.

BCL will be followed by the maiden edition of the BCL U-19 tournament. The age-level tournament will also feature four franchises and is likely to begin on February 17. All the matches will be played at MA Aziz Stadium and Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. The four teams in this tournament are likely to be sold to the same franchises that own teams in the BCL first-class competition.

Akram while speaking to the media yesterday stated that BCL 2016 will be played in double-league format which means there will be no grand finale. The winner of the tournament will be decided based on the points table at the end of the final round.

The current national cricketers however, will not partake in the tournament. The Tigers will be busy preparing for the probable home series against Zimbabwe, likely to begin on January 16. This will be followed by the preparation for the Asia Cup T20.

“The franchises have always been positive and co-operative. They know all too well that the national cricketers will not be available for the tournament given that they have national duties to perform,” said Akram before adding, “However, if the national team management thinks that one or a few players can play at least a couple of matches, we should not have any issues with that.”

BCB tournament committee chief Akram said all efforts will be made to have sporting wickets in the BCL this time around.
