Bangladesh suffered a crushing seven-wicket defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in their final round-robin match of the 2016 Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup at Asian Institute of Technology Ground, Bangkok in Thailand on Saturday.
The loss ended any hopes Bangladesh harboured of qualifying for the grand finale. The women in red and green previously lost to India and Pakistan and won against Nepal and Thailand. With four points, Bangladesh ended their campaign at fourth position in the six-team standings.
Arch-rival India and Pakistan will take on each other in the final on Sunday.
Winning the toss, Sri Lanka captain Hasini Perera decided to field first.
Bangladesh made a brilliant start, riding on opening batters Sanjida Islam (35) and Shamima Sultana (17) who posted 43 runs inside the 10th over.
Shamima was the first batter to depart in the 10th over while Sanjida soon followed her opening partner in the 18th over.
However, Bangladesh were unable to capitalise on the good start, eventually managing 93/3 with No 3 batter Shaila Sharmin remaining unbeaten on 25.
Sri Lanka seamer Chamari Jayangani took two wickets conceding 24 runs in her four-over spell.
In reply, the Lankans chased down their target with seven wickets and six balls to spare. Jayangani was the top-scorer with 39 runs and was adjudged player of the match for her all-round performance.
Bangladesh skipper Rumana Ahmed bagged two wickets for seven runs in two overs.BRIEF SCORESri Lanka 97/3 in 19 overs (Jayangani 39, Mendis 24, Rumana 2/7) beat Bangladesh 93/3 (Sanjida 35, Shaila 25*, Jayangani 2/24) by seven wickets POINTS TABLETeams M W L PtsIndia 5 5 0 10Pakistan 5 4 1 8Sri Lanka 5 3 2 6Bangladesh 5 2 3 4Thailand 5 1 4 2Nepal 5 0 5 0
