Mushfiqur hits back at singer Asif over fixing claims

Update : 01 Dec 2016, 08:32 PM
Barisal Bulls and Bangladesh Test skipper Mushfiqur Rahim has lashed out at the franchise's brand ambassador, singer Asif Akbar, who alleged that the Barisal players are involved in match-fixing in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20's fourth edition. Asif on Monday posted a status on his facebook profile claiming that he is convinced that a few of the foreign and local Barisal players are involved in fixing matches. However, he also wrote that he has no evidence. “The (Barisal) batsmen become handicapped every time the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th overs come around while the bowlers turn into Tigers. T20 cricket is the other name for gambling. Some of the local and foreign cricketers of our team are involved in match-fixing. I don’t have any proof. But if the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) and ACSU (anti-corruption and security unit) look into the matter deeply, they will surely get hold of it,” Asif said on social media. When queried to give his reaction to Asif's allegations in the post-match press conference on Tuesday following their clash against Comilla Victorians, Mushfiq minced no words. “It is just disgusting and shameful. I don’t know how he could say something like this, considering his status. I am not sure whether he was in his senses or not while writing it,” Mushfiq told the media. “I will surely ask him as to who the local and foreign players are. He said he is sure but there is no proof. What kind of a language is it?” Mushfiq enquired angrily. He continued, “Apart from a madman, this cannot be written by a human being. He could be upset with our performance. The people of Barisal are upset because of the way we are playing. But this is not the manner. We play cricket and earn our bread and butter. I don’t know if anyone can betray their profession.” When Dhaka Tribune contacted Asif, he declined to comment. However, he said he maintains good relations with the Barisal captain. “I have a very good relationship with him (Mushfiq). Perhaps he was upset because of the defeat. That is why probably he reacted in this manner,” said Asif.
