Sleepless night for Hathurusingha over team selection

Update : 26 Aug 2017, 08:11 PM
Bangladesh cricket team coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s tweet about his “sleepless night” has stirred speculation in the cricket community and in the social media platforms. The former Sri Lanka cricketer in his verified account tweeted “Rock n hard place!! Give in to emotion of a nation or go with b combo...! #sleeplessnights” – at around 4am on Saturday. With the first Test match between the Tigers and Australia set to start on Sunday in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, such tweet from the Bangladesh coach is being said to have hinted the pressure he is currently dealing with over selection of the playing XI. The Tigers coach and the national selection panel were recently on the receiving end of criticism over selection of the first Test squad. The initial exclusion of batsman Mominul Haque saw the BCB and the national selection panel blown away with criticism. Mominul eventually got included in the squad but only as the replacement for youngster Mosaddek Hossain, who was suffering from eye infection at that time.

Bangladesh Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim during the pre-match press conference at SBNS on Saturday, was queried over Hathurusingha’s tweet. The wicketkeeper-batsman informed that he was unaware of the tweet, given that he is not a regular on social media platforms. “It is tough to select the XI when you have a squad of 14 best cricketers. It is not a bad thing for the coach I will say,” said Mushfiq. “The job becomes tough if you have an injury in the squad or need to keep a good player out of the playing XI due to combination. It is good for us that we have enough resources in the team. We will have sleepless nights if we play well and win the game,” he added.
