Al Amin bagged gold medal in the men's 3,000m steeplechase event while Gaurango Roy won silver in hammer throw at Malaysia Open Athletics Championship in Pahang.

Both medals are Bangladesh's first of a kind in the country's athletics history in international competitions.

Al Amin clocked 9.32:39 minutes to secure top podium finish as well as Bangladesh's first steeplechase medal in 37 years.

Majibor Rahman last clinched a bronze in the 3rd South Asian Games, then known as South Asian Federation Games, in Kolkata in 1987.

Bangladesh Army's athletics coach and former national athlete Farid Khan Chowdhury told Dhaka Tribune that Majibor's medal was the last steeplechase medal won by any Bangladeshi at an international meet.

Gaurango threw his hammer to 50.28 meters to clinch second spot, which the athletics federation stated to be Bangladesh's first achievement outside the country.

Sourav Mia also won silver in pole vault event after jumping 4.40m.

Al Amin, Gaurango and Sourav all are from Bangladesh Army athletics team.

Earlier, Bangladesh's only female athlete in the travelling group, Ritu Akter claimed silver in women's high jump event.
