Tumpa misses bronze by a whisker

Update : 09 Apr 2018, 07:26 PM
Bangladesh shooter Ummey Sultana Tumpa missed out on a bronze medal by just 3.3 points in the Commonwealth Games 2018 as she finished fourth in the 10m air-rifle final at Belmont Shooting Centre in Gold Coast, Australia Monday. This is Bangladesh's second best result in the Games after Abdullah Hel Baki earned the country its only medal (silver) in the same event of the men's version the previous day. The right-handed Tumpa scored 202 to finish fourth while Indian Apurvi Chandela took the bronze with a total of 225.3. Earlier on the same day, Tumpa finished sixth in the qualification round with a score of 410.5 but the other Bangladeshi Sayeda Hasan failed to qualify for the final after being placed at 10th.

In the 10m air-pistol men's final, Shakil Ahmed finished sixth out of eight participants with 150.1. Shakil was placed eighth in the qualification round to become the last man to move to the final while Anwar Hossain finished 13th to see the exit door. Baki will now take part in the men’s 50m rifle prone event Tuesday before trying his luck in his last event – the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions Saturday. Baki informed that he concentrated solely on the 10m air-rifle event during his preparation and doesn't have much expectation in the upcoming events. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s athletics campaign will conclude Tuesday when Shirin Akter takes to the track in the women's 200m sprint.
