State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque today announced that the government is set to make sports compulsory from Class IV starting from the next academic year.
Responding to a question from Chattogram-16 MP Zahidul Islam, the state minister said the initiative is part of the ruling party’s election manifesto.
“Initially, the programme will be launched with seven sporting events, with plans to gradually include more disciplines over time,” he said.
He added that the government aims to give equal importance to sports alongside academics to ensure the overall development of students. Aminul Haque also emphasised that the move is intended to reduce children’s dependence on digital devices while encouraging greater participation in physical activities.
The minister expressed hope that the initiative would have a positive impact on students’ physical and mental well-being.
