The Dhaka University campus turned into a festive venue early on Sunday with Argentina fans bringing out a procession to celebrate their team's win over Mexico in the group stage of the Fifa World Cup 2022.
The world cup dream of La Albiceleste had become dim after losing 2-1 to Saudi Arabia in their first match of the World Cup in Qatar. However, the dream reignited after they beat Mexico 2-0 in their do-or-die match.
As soon as the referee blew the final whistle, the Argentina fans of Dhaka University's Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall erupted in cheers. The whole TSC area became festive with the cheers of Lionel Messi fans. They brought out processions, shouting Messi's praises and roamed around different areas of the university.
One of them, Hasan Mahmud, said: “I am a fan of Argentina because of Messi. Today was a do-or-die match. I had decided that if we lost today, I would end my football madness. I knew Messi would not disappoint us.”
Imdadul, another fan of Argentina, said the victory is for football and for the Messi fans. “This win gives us hope that Argentina will come back stronger in their match against Poland, and we will see one of Messi's best World Cups.”
