A legal notice has been sent to government officials urging the dubbing of Indian Hindi movies into Bangla before screening them in Bangladesh's cinema halls.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Mahmudul Hasan sent the notice via registered post on Sunday, addressing the information ministry secretary, the defence ministry secretary, the Bangladesh Film Certification Board secretary, and the Bangladesh Film Artistes Association secretary.
The notice calls for action within three days, warning that legal proceedings will be pursued if no steps are taken.
The notice states that Hindi is the official language of India and that India's influence is strong throughout South Asia.
The popularity of Indian Hindi films and TV shows in Bangladesh is cited, noting the excitement these releases generate among Bangladeshi audiences.
This enthusiasm, the notice claims, could lead to an increased interest in Hindi, eventually influencing daily communication.
The notice describes the Hindi language as a potential threat to Bangladeshi sovereignty, hence requesting the dubbing of Indian Hindi films into Bangla, using the voices of Bangladeshi actors from the Bangladesh Film Artistes Association.
If no action is taken within three days, the lawyer intends to file a writ in the High Court to compel the government to take appropriate steps to dub Hindi movies into Bangla for local screenings.
