Art maestro Zainal Abedin’s masterpiece has reached a new record high in the international market. A master painting has been sold for US $692,048 or about 82 million taka, which is the most expensive sold piece by any Bangladeshi artist.
Abedin’s “Untitled” was sold at the "Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art" auction, organised by Sotheby's in London on September 26.
The piece has been described as "ink and wash on paper". It was originally gifted to Cedomil Plazek, a hydrogeologist who lived in Dhaka while working for the United Nations by Abedin himself.
Another of Abedin's works also fetched a hefty price, “Untitled (Group of Figures)" was sold for US $643,690 or about 77 miilion taka. This was also to Plazek.
Another of Abedin’s pieces was sold for US $289,663 “Untitled (Figures)”. The piece created with raw ink, pencil and paper depicts human emotion like no other.
Abedin is also known to depict human history, especially Bangladeshi history in his work. The heart wrenching “famine series” depicting the Bengal famine of 1943 still remains of the most harrowing and powerful pieces in South Asian art history.
