With the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the country was overcome with the joy of victory and freedom, but amidst this joy countless historical artefacts, monuments, buildings (including private property) were vandalized and looted.
An unfortunate victim to this vandalism was musician Rahul Ananda. On July 5 his house was looted and set ablaze by miscreants. It is located adjacent to Bangbandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's home at Dhanmondi 32.
Once a vibrant hub of culture and music, now reduced to ashes. It is an unfortunate situation for a man who stood firm with the students, encouraging them to stay true to their cause, move forward and believe.
Fellow band mate of Joler Gaan, Saiful Islam Jarnal said, “Rahul Da and his family are shaken and take shelter to a secret place known to only a few. We could not contact him yet. It was not even his house, it was a rental he was living in for decades.”
“They torched the whole house along with Rahul Da's musical instruments,” Jarnal further stated.
His family is said be to physically unharmed but mentally destroyed.
Ananda’s residence was even visited by the French president Emmanuel Macron last year during his short trip.
To show support and solidarity, artists and Rahul’s industry friends will host demonstration. To stand against destruction of art, structures and monuments. Organized by theatre troupe Prachyanat, the event will be held on Wednesday, August 7 at 4:30 pm in front of the main gate of National Theatre, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
