'Eric': Puppets, puzzles, and profound plot twists

It’s not an easy watch, but it’s definitely an important one

"Eric" is the type of show that leaves you sitting there, thinking and awestruck, with what you just watched when the end credits roll in.

The six-episode dark, gripping psychological thriller is a masterpiece. Not only is it a beautifully written plot, but it also delivers a disturbing yet profound narrative.

The show portrays profound themes through each character’s struggles.

Vincent, a puppeteer whose son goes missing on his way from school, is determined to find him. Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Vincent is a masterstroke. He is an unpleasant man who deals with mental issues and an alcohol problem. This is cunningly portrayed through the character Eric, a seven-foot puppet who represents his inner voice.

Throughout the series, Vincent is unaware of how his actions affect other people. This lack of awareness stems from his cold, privileged parents. The series questions how childhood trauma might affect an adult in his day-to-day life and his relationships with others.

Detective Mike Ledroit is another character through which Abby Morgan portrays societal issues. He deals with corruption in his workplace in the 1970s as a Black man in the NYPD.

Amidst his personal turmoil at home, he faces immense pressure from a frustrated community to find young boys who continue to go missing. Mike’s struggle is heart-wrenching and adds a profound layer to the narrative.

Abby Morgan’s world-building in “Eric” is truly remarkable. The attention to detail in set design, costumes, and overall atmosphere immerses viewers in a time when societal issues were starkly different yet hauntingly similar to today.

The series does not shy away from difficult topics. It’s not an easy watch, but it’s definitely an important one. The emotional depth and moral complexities make this series profoundly impactful. Yet, despite all the important lessons one can take away from the series, it is not boring. However, in some parts, the pacing seems a little slow.

Despite the disturbing content, “Eric” is an incredibly addictive show. I usually prefer to pace myself while watching series, savoring each episode. But with this one, I couldn't stop. The storytelling is so gripping, the characters so compelling, that I binge-watched the entire show.

In conclusion, "Eric" is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates profound storytelling and complex characters. It’s a series that challenges viewers to reflect on their own beliefs and the world around them. It’s the type of show that lingers in your mind long after the final episode, prompting deep reflection and discussion.
