Renowned filmmaker Sanjay Gadhvi, director of the blockbuster films "Dhoom" (2004) and its sequel "Dhoom 2" (2006), passed away at the age of 56 at his Mumbai residence on Sunday, November 19.

His daughter, Sanjina Gadhvi, confirmed the news to PTI, stating that the director, who would have turned 57 in three days, appeared to have succumbed to a sudden heart attack despite being in good health.

Kunal Kohli, director of "Hum Tum" and "Fanaa," expressed his shock and grief on social media, remembering the times spent together with Gadhvi at Yash Raj Films. Kohli wrote, "This is beyond shocking. #SanjayGadhvi RIP never thought I’d have to write your obituary. Shared an office for many years at YRF, lunch dubbas, discussions. Will miss you my friend. This is too hard to accept."

Sanjay Gadhvi initiated his directorial journey in 2000 with "Tere Liye" and further contributed to the industry with notable projects like "Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai" (2002), marking his collaboration with Yash Raj Films. However, it was the action thriller "Dhoom" that propelled him to widespread acclaim, making motorcycling a cultural phenomenon among Indian youth in the early 2000s.

The sequel, "Dhoom 2" (2006), boasted a star-studded cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Bipasha Basu. Gadhvi, however, did not helm the third installment, as it was directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya in 2013.

Throughout his career, Gadhvi contributed to films such as "Kidnap" (2008), "Ajab Gazabb Love" (2012), and "Operation Parindey" (2020), his final directorial venture.

Sanjina Gadhvi is survived by Sanjay Gadhvi’s wife and another daughter.

The sudden demise of Sanjay Gadhvi has left the film fraternity and fans in mourning, remembering his impactful contributions to Indian cinema.
