West Meets East announces juries

The jury board consisting of N Rashed Chowdhury, Sameer Ahmed, Yana Lekarska, Åge Hoffart and Angelos Stavros Rallis are responsible for selecting the top 10 projects that will proceed to the next stages of the festival.

The 22nd Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) has announced a five-member jury board.

The jury board consisting of N Rashed Chowdhury, Sameer Ahmed, Yana Lekarska, Åge Hoffart and Angelos Stavros Rallis are responsible for selecting the top 10 projects that will proceed to the next stages of the festival. 

N Rashed Chowdhury is an Independent filmmaker and film activist in Bangladesh. He has been involved with Bangladesh Short Film Forum-the pioneer organisation of the independent film movement of Bangladesh since the early 90s. Rashed had been an active participant in the Film Society movement of Bangladesh, initiated during the 60’s.

Sameer Ahmed is a Dhaka-based freelance filmmaker. He has edited and directed various films, TV Drama projects, and corporate commercials for multinational clients ranging from Airtel to Unilever to BBC World Service Trust. He won the best advertisement award from Brand Forum in 2008 for Banglalink TVC (Theme: Vote for Cox’s Bazar) and among other awards.

Age Hoffart has been active in the Norwegian film industry for nearly 40 years in addition to his full time job as distributor of feature films internationally.

Angelos Stavros Rallis started his career as a theatre, TV director for the Greek National TV. His films “A Place for Everyone” and “Are You Shingal?” have been screened at more than 80 International Film Festivals, including IDFA, Hot Docs, the European parliament. 

Yana Lekarska, is a Bulgarian filmmaker, is an alumnus of Berlinale Talents 2020, Sarajevo Talents 2018, and Tokyo Talents 2017 as well as a participant in the Film Production Residency Program organised by the Busan Independent Film Association in 2017. 

The festival includes categories such as "Asian Cinema Section," "Retrospective," "Bangladesh Panorama Section," "Cinema of the World Section," "Children Films Section," "Women Filmmakers Section," "Short and Independent Films Section," and "Spiritual Films Section”. 

The "West Meets East" section of the DIFF was designed to bridge the divide between the Western film industry and filmmakers from the East

In 2022, this unique section evolved into the "Screenplay Lab”. In 2024, this section is set to return for its third edition, promising selected filmmakers from South Asia an invaluable opportunity.

The first prize carries a reward of $5000 while the second and third placers will be rewarded $3000 and $2000, respectively.
