Mahde Hasan’s 'Sand City' selected for 'Visions Sud Est' fund

Update : 13 Dec 2021, 09:55 PM

Director Mahde Hasan's film "Sand City" has qualified for Swiss fund Visions Sud Est. In total, 172 projects were submitted and only five, including "Sand City," were selected for the fund.

The film is based on three marginalized characters in Dhaka whose lives have been touched by sand in one way or another. A sand washing plant worker, a monk trying to make a sand mandala, and an NGO worker who needs sand for her kitty litter are at the heart of this film.

"Jet Lag," "Mami Wata," "Once Upon a Time in Bhutan..." and "All We Imagine as Light" are the four other projects selected for a grant of 150'000 Swiss francs.

The fund Visions Sud Est is a joint initiative by the trigon-film foundation, Festival International de Films de Fribourg, Locarno Film Festival, Visions du Réel in Nyon and the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

"Sand City" had previously bagged grants from Open Doors Locarno (Switzerland), Produireausud (France), La Fabrique cinéma de l'institut français - les cinémas du monde (France) & Film Bazaar (India).

Visions Sud Est was founded in 2005 and has supported 171 projects from all across the world ever since.

147 of these films have already wrapped up production and many have been officially invited to prestigious festivals around the world, some being awarded with prizes such as the Golden Bear in Berlin, the Golden Shell in San Sebastián, the Black Pearl Award in Abu Dhabi or the Golden Kapok Award in Guangzhou.
