Director Rezwan Shahriar Sumit’s debut feature film Nonajoler Kabbo (The Salt in Our Waters) won the prestigious NETPAC Award at the 26th Kolkata International Film Festival.

A Bangladesh-France co-production, Nonajoler Kabbo competed in the Asian Select (NETPAC Award) category alongside five other films.

"This is a proud moment for the entire cast and crew of The Salt in Our Waters (Nonajoler Kabbo). Kolkata IFF is very close to the heart of Bangladesh's film community, so I am sure everyone will be elated to hear this news. This win will inspire hundreds of aspiring Bangladeshi filmmakers whose entire year was shrouded in darkness and uncertainty due to the pandemic. My message to them is this - Hang on tight. Use this down time to develop your projects properly. Stay true to your characters and to your own voice. Darkness will recede and your light will shine,” said director Sumit.

Nonajoler Kabbo premiered at the 64th BFI London Film Festival, one of the world’s leading film festivals and a vibrant multicultural hub to celebrate diverse global cinema. Sumit’s film was one of the 50 films officially selected for last year’s highly competitive slate.

It is set to head to Göteborg Film Festival next, where the film will compete in the Ingmar Bergman Award category.
