Sequel to 2011 virus film 'Contagion' is in early development

Director Steven Soderbergh, who made the eerily prescient virus film, has recently admitted that a 'philosophical' sequel to his 2011 thriller is in the works

A film about a horrible and mysterious virus spreading in China was released in 2011 and saw moderate success. However, it became a viral hit in 2020.

Upon release, it was far from a blockbuster, despite starring actors like Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Michael Douglas.

Almost after ten years, Contagion made it back to business, joining the list of most downloaded movies in the US Apple iTunes Store.

Director Steven Soderbergh, who made the eerily prescient film that predicted the pandemic, has recently admitted that a 'philosophical' sequel to his 2011 thriller is in the works.

Would it strictly adhere to its prequel?

“Not in a literal sense,” said Soderbergh. “I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns (Contagion writer) is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to ‘Contagion,’ but in a different context."

"You’ll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired, but very different hair colors. So, Scott and I had been talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a ‘Contagion’-type story? We have been working on that; we should probably hot foot it a little bit."

The director is optimistic that filmmaking would be a less rigorous process in the coming days. “I’m hoping by the spring that things will have changed to an extent that the pure scale of Covid protocols for production have been diminished a little bit,” Soderbergh said.
