Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee in critical condition

Soumitra's condition remains critical, and he is likely to be put on ventilation, informs his physicians

Three-time National Film Award winning actor Soumitra Chatterjee was hospitalized on October 6 after testing positive for Covid-19.

The 85-year-old actor was shifted to intensive care on October 10 in a private hospital after his health condition had significantly worsened.

According to his physicians, his condition remains very critical as of today and he is likely to be put on ventilation. The Feluda actor is at an ‘acute confusional stage,’ and showing signs of disorientation after being administered a few units of plasma.

Back in October 6, Soumitra's daughter Poulami Bose informed the media that her father’s condition was stable. "The only symptom that he had was fever. He had a low-grade temperature for two days. We admitted him to a private hospital today after his positive report a day earlier. Right now, his temperature is normal.”

However, his condition has now become a cause of major concern because of several age-related ailments.

Soumitra Chatterjee, best known for his acclaimed collaborations with filmmaker Satyajit Ray, is one of the finest living actors of Bangla cinema.

Soumitra, who made his acting debut in Satyajit's Apur Sansar, is the first actor to play Feluda on screen. The legendary star has notable films like Charulata, Devi, Akash Kusum, Ghare Baire, Ganashatru, Joy Baba Felunath and others under his belt.

Over the course of his long and varied career, he has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna and India's top film honour Dadasaheb Phalke Award in recognition of the unparalleled heights he reached as an actor and the immense contribution he made to Bangla cinema.  

The news of Soumitra’s testing positive has raised concerns within 'Tolly para' as it is fondly referred to as. Several of Soumitra's colleagues have wished for his speedy recovery.
