American hip-hop artist Kaly takes on Bollywood

Update : 03 Jun 2017, 08:59 PM
Born to immigrant parents on July 29, 1985, Kaly almost didn’t make it to this world. Surviving his mother’s umbilical cord choking him, he was welcomed into a modest one-bedroom apartment furnished only with a toaster, a black and white television, and a mattress on the floor. Though much of the rest of this time is forgotten, it is these humble surroundings that have shaped the artist who has come to be known as Kaly. Given the name by a former flame for his naturally smooth tone of voice, Kaly is known more now for his raw, gritty vocals and uncompromising lyrics. Recently, he has become a news as the biopic of Sachin Tendulker released.449209-sachinThe hip-hop artist Kunal “Kaly” Patel says he never knows whether his vocals will appear on a track by Indian musical composer and Oscar winner A.R. Rahman until an hour or two before its official release. “He will literally call me when I am on New Jersey Transit,” Patel told NBC News. Rahman, who is known for his attention to detail, recently told a magazine that he did 14 different versions of the new song “Sachin Sachin” before deciding to use the one featuring Kaly on the soundtrack for the upcoming film Sachin: A Billion Dreams, which traces the life of retired cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar. The song marks the second time this year Kaly has appeared on one of Rahman’s soundtracks. The first, in which he has a verse on the soundtrack of the comedy Oh Jaanu, came about after he was introduced to Rahman by mutual friends. l
