Rich tribute paid to Kalidas Karmakar

People from all walks of life paid their last tributes to eminent artist Kalidas Karmakar  at the Central Shaheed Minar on Monday.

His body was kept there from 11am to 1 pm, and people paid their tributes by placing wreaths. Another tribute ceremony was also held in the Institute of Fine Arts premises at 10 am.

Many cultural organizations including the Sammilito Sanskritik Jote, Bengal Foundation, Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, Department of Fine Arts of  Jagannath University, Bangladesh Ministry of Culture, Gallery Cosmos, Dhaka Gallery, BISIC Design Center, Shilpakala Academy, Bangla Academy, National Museum paid tributes, among others.   

Members of various cultural groups and distinguished personalities also paid their last tributes to the internationally acclaimed artist. 

Dramatist Liaquat Ali Laki, Monirul Islam, Hamiduzzaman Khan, Hashem Khan, Shahid Qazi, Rokeya Sultana, Farida Zaman, former DUCSU VP Akhtaruzzaman, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Profesoor Dr Akhtaruzzaman and pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Samad, columnist Mofidul Haque were present on the tribute ceremony. 

A minute of silence was observed during the ceremony. Then, the body of Kalidas Karmakar was taken to Baredeswari Kali Temple in Sabujbag from the Shaheed Minar. He will be cremated there.

Kalidas Karmakar passed away on Friday.  He was 75.

Born on January 10, 1946 in Faridpur, Kalidas completed his graduation from the Government College of Fine Arts and Crafts in Kolkata in 1969.

Kalidas was awarded the Shilpakala Padak in 2016 and the Ekushey Padak in 2018 for his contribution to fine arts.

His diverse artworks featuring found objects, handmade paper, and oil on canvas prints have been widely exhibited throughout South Asia, Middle East, Europe, and the United States.
