Trailer for Greta Gerwig’s much-anticipated take on Little Women was released earlier this week. Featuring a star-studded ensemble cast like its 1994 predecessor, the trailer shows Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Emma Watson, and Meryl Streep in 19th-century America in the aftermath of the Civil War. Ronan and Chalamet had shared the screen before in Gerwig’s critically acclaimed Lady Bird (2017).
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, the story follows four teenage girls– Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Amy, Meg (Emma Watson), Beth- living in Massachusetts in the 1860s.
The trailer starts with Joe telling a potential publisher: “I’m working on a novel. It is a story of my life, and my sisters.” The stern looking elderly man replies: “Make it short and spicy, and if the main character is a girl, make sure she’s married by the end.”
Streep plays their old-fashioned rich aunt who keeps pushing the art loving sisters to get married. Chalamet plays the neighbour trying to court Jo. But she has big dreams, leaving no space for a whirlwind romance. This aspiration becomes the source of conflict between Jo and everyone around her, except Amy, who is equally ambitious.
Little Women will hit the big screen this Christmas.
